Having a bootable USB is very essential, especially if you are a Notebook user. Using bootable USB to install an operating system (OS) not only makes the installation faster, but also saves a DVD.

Creating or using an USB drive to install Windows operating systems is very easy if you follow the below mentioned steps.

If you are planning to use bootable USB to install Windows 7 or Vista please refer our guides:

Coming back to bootable USB guide, here we assume that you are using either Vista or Windows 7 to create a bootable USB.

1. Insert your USB (4GB+ preferable) stick to the system and backup all the data from the USB as we are going to format the USB to make it as bootable.

2. Open elevated Command Prompt. To do this, type in CMD in Start menu search field and hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter. Alternatively, navigate to Start > All programs >Accessories > right click on Command Prompt and select run as administrator.

3. When the Command Prompt opens, enter the following command:

DISKPART and hit enter.

LIST DISK and hit enter.

Once you enter the LIST DISK command, it will show the disk number of your USB drive. In the below image my USB drive disk no is Disk 1.

4. In this step you need to enter all the below commands one by one and hit enter. As these commands are self explanatory, you can easily guess what these commands do.

SELECT DISK 1 (Replace DISK 1 with your disk number)

CLEAN

CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

SELECT PARTITION 1

ACTIVE

FORMAT FS=NTFS

(Format process may take few seconds)

ASSIGN

EXIT

Don’t close the command prompt as we need to execute one more command at the next step. Just minimize it.

5. Insert your Windows DVD in the optical drive and note down the drive letter of the optical drive and USB media. Here I use “D” as my optical (DVD) drive letter and “H” as my USB drive letter.

6. Go back to command prompt and execute the following commands:

D:CD BOOT and hit enter. Where “D” is your DVD drive letter.

CD BOOT and hit enter to see the below message.

BOOTSECT.EXE/NT60 H:

(Where “H” is your USB drive letter)

7. Copy Windows DVD contents to USB.

You are done with your bootable USB. You can now use this bootable USB as bootable DVD on any computer that comes with USB boot feature (most of the current motherboards support this feature).

Note that this bootable USB guide will not work if you are trying to make a bootable USB on XP computer.

After the below par Need for Speed: ProStreet and Need for Speed: Undercover, EA isn't prepared to weigh anchor and calmly abandon its once popular racer franchise. The latest NFS game marks a fresh start for a series. This seems like an almost impossible task for a series that changed its design and play style so many times. How does one regain faith of NFS fans and at the same time make it interesting for new-comers? Such an endeavor is difficult enough as it is. Quite simply, because of the previous two lackluster releases, there's a lot to make up for.

Need for Speed SHIFT does away with the story-driven experience from Undercover. The game also has less of an arcadish feel to it, placing increased emphases on more realistic driving and traditional racing events. During the Career mode, players are offered a range of races and challenges to go through before more "serious" events and vehicles are unlocked. It doesn't take too long to get to those, because a majority of tracks at the beginning are rather short. Also, despite the developers move to increase realism and add more believable car physics, the game itself isn't too difficult even when you've switched every assist option available. For those of you who need the help though, it's possible to set how much you want the CPU to assist during breaking and steering. If that's not enough there's a track indicator placed on the road, showing when the player should slow down or speed up.

There's no shortage of super-cars, that's for sure. You'll be glad that there are a lot of tracks on offer as well. Although it's not exceptionally difficult, SHIFT is a suitable test for your driving skills. The AI in this game does a good job of adapting to the player's driving style. Competitors know how to take advantage of your mistakes, while doing their best to stay in the race and achieve a decent score.

Speaking of scores, NFS SHIFT features an RPG-like score system with specific awards given to the player depending on the event was completed. More aggressive drivers -- those who don't hesitate to push other cars off the track - get a specific amount of points, as do those who manage to finish a 'clean' race. Eventually, you get an overall score that either leans more towards an 'aggressive' or 'precision' driving style, or indeed something in between. It's simple and easy-to-get-into. You also accumulate experience points, in addition to receiving cash rewards, which, again, hinge on your overall performance. An important part of this is completing specific challenges during each race, thus collecting 'stars' and increasing your chances to enter the NFS World Tour. Hm, an element very similar to what's available in DiRT 2.

Well, it's easy when there's nobody around.

I'd like to take this sucker through daily traffic. Just once.

Apart from that, SHIFT shares another similarity with Codematers' DiRT 2. The races become considerably more entertaining if you're playing against real opponents. You get additional fun and challenges thanks to the point system. Of course, being online during a single-player game also has its advantages. Players can check out leader boards and compare their best times in races to other players.

From a technical standpoint, the game works just fine. It also looks good, although still far behind games like DiRT 2 and what we're bound to see in future races like Turn 10's Forza Motorsport 3 and Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5. The sound effects are okay and the choice of music is acceptable (also, thank God they've refrained from using those annoying announcers like in Pro Street).

When you consider all the ups and downs of this one, I must admit it just doesn't retain thrill we've got from titles like Most Wanted and the Underground series. Granted, it's a different type of game now, so it may be a bit unfair to assume this would bring the same amount of excitement you get from cop-chases or story-based races and challenges. Yes, it's a different game. But it's simply not fun anymore. Not to mention, it lacks a unique touch - something that would make it stand out from other competing games in the genre. Outside the multiplayer, I'm afraid there's little reason to keep returning to Need for Speed SHIFT. Solo play starts to feels thin and repetitive after about an hour or so. Perhaps it's better to rent this one before purchasing it.

*** Resident protection
Resident protection, i.e. the real-time protection of the computer, is one of the most important parts of an antivirus program today. avast! features a powerful resident module that is able to detect the virus before it has any chance to infect your computer.
E-mail protection consists of two independent modules; first, there is a generic scanner working on the SMTP/POP3/IMAP4 protocol level. It is capable of protecting any existing e-mail client that uses these protocols. Second, there is a special plugin for MS Outlook only; it is completely transparent, requiring no special settings.

*** Automatic updates
Automatic updates are another key point in virus protection. Both the virus database and the program itself can be updated automatically.

*** PUSH updates
A special feature of the Professional Edition are PUSH updates. It is a dramatic change in the philosophy of updates. Usually, every installed program checks every now and then whether a new version is available. PUSH updates, however, are initialized by our server; they result in your computer quickly responding and performing the necessary update. The system is based on the SMTP protocol, i.e. on usual e-mail messages. The updates itself are controlled by the avast! resident e-mail providers (MS Outlook and Internet Mail).

*** Virus Chest
The main properties of the Virus Chest are complete isolation from the rest of the operating system (no outside process, i.e. no virus either, may access the files inside) and the fact that the files inside the Chest may not be run (i.e. there is no danger in storing viruses there).

*** System integration
avast! antivirus features outstanding integration into your system. The scanning can be started directly from Windows Explorer, by clicking a folder or a file with your right mouse button and selecting the corresponding choice from the menu.
Another interesting feature is a special screen-saver that performs scanning for viruses during its run-time. avast! antivirus works together with your favorite screen-saver, so you don't have to change to anything you wouldn't like.
Another new option is the boot-time scan (Windows NT/2000/XP/.NET only). It is important in the case that a virus is suspected to be active on your computer. The boot-time scan is performed before the virus may get activated, so the virus cannot influence the scanning in any way.

LGs new watch phone is Dick Tracy … and then some

Growing up a fan of Dick Tracy, I longed to have Dick’s cool watch radio phone which enabled him to communicate with headquarters. But in reality, the deployment of such a device has been left “wanting,” mostly do to reception problems due to analog cell systems. But with the advent of digital carriers and broadband highspeed wireless internet, the promise is now hopeful for not only improved cellular audio capability, but video capability as well. And that means, a video watchphone is now a reality. Well, I’m excited.

A video watch phone is definitely cool. But will it work?

In addition to being able to make standard and video calls, the GD910 can also make text messages and goes completely wireless with a bluetooth headset so the user doesn’t have to scream to talk. The GD910 also sends email and has voice commands to access it’s features. And there’s even a cool, stereo mp3 player. Oh, and it’s a watch, too. Fancy that.

The LG GD910 Watchphone, will be available August 27th in limited quantities from Orange in the UK, but it won’t be cheap. It’ll cost about $1,000 US, and that doesn’t include a monthly contract fee, details of which have yet to be announced. But you can bet that with bandwidth for video and punitive fees for going past arbitrarily small data caps, that this technology may be priced right out of existence to anyone but business and government personnel.

Nice to see gadgets being used to delegate teaching our kids stuff, including telling the time. Guess robot nannys aren’t really too far-fetched to consider, eh? Hammacher’s Talking Teaching Alarm Clock is another device that picked up the Product of the Year Award from Creative Child Magazine, where it will whip your little ones into shape verbally where telling the current time is concerned.

The clock displays a random analog time on a high-contrast LCD and asks, “What time is it?” in a clear female voice. Children can check their answers by pressing a button that prompts the clock to speak the correct time and display the digital equivalent. The clock is preprogrammed with five levels of difficulty, beginning with only round hours (three o’clock) and progressing to more difficult-to-learn times. Times can also be entered manually, allowing you to customize lessons. You can set the clock face to turn green at a specific time in the morning, signaling to a child that it is okay to get out of bed. The clock has a working alarm, 10-minute snooze function, and a night-light.

You can opt for it to be powered by either AC or a couple of AAA batteries. It retails for $49.95 a pop, and is a great way to introduce your kids to the wonderful world of the snooze alarm concept - something they might regret in the future as they snooze past their working time.
